Learn how to use Canvas

Canvas Online Student Orientation Class

Once you get logged into Canvas, you’ll see an announcement on your dashboard with a link to our Canvas Student Orientation. This is a great way to get familiar with the features of Canvas. Once you join the class it will always be accessible to you.

Canvas in Person Orientations every quarter:

If you’d prefer an in-person introduction to Canvas you can sign up for one of our orientations. We offer them at the beginning of each quarter. The sign –up sheet will be available one month before each quarter.

Getting Help in Canvas

Submit a Help Ticket in Canvas:

If you run into an issue with Canvas you can submit a Help ticket from where you are in Canvas. This will come directly to the North Seattle College student support desk in eLearning. Please give very specific information so the help desk can trouble shoot the issue and get back to you. If you choose help and submit the ticket on the page in Canvas where you are having issues, they can view the issue directly. Here a few tips on how to submit an effective ticket.

Choose HELP in Canvas and choose: SUBMIT A TICKET.

For example:

"I cannot upload my image. I am on my Mac (or PC) computer at home. I clicked on reply in the Discussion forum, chose the image picture icon and I could not find my photo."

Bad Example:  The Discussions don't work

Good Example: I am on a PC in Firefox. When I choose reply in the Discussion, I get a place to write my words but I cannot see where to attach a file.

Panopto Recordings

Some instructors will use recorded videos which have been created using the lecture capture software Panopto. Panopto recordings can be viewed through a web browser while logged into Canvas or through the Panopto Mobile app. When accessing recordings in the Canvas Student mobile app you may be directed to the Panopto app to view them.

Browsers

Which browsers does Canvas support?

Although most of the major browsers are supported by Canvas Chrome and Firefox are generally the least problematic. We recommend you have several browsers installed.

Publisher Websites and Materials

If your course uses a publisher web site, like Pearson MyLab, Cengage, or McGaw-Hill, our office can provide some general technical help but your best resource is your instructor or contacting the publishers technical help desk provided by your instructor or theTechnical Support listed on the Publisher’s website.

Check the status of Canvas

Canvas is a hosted application and is managed by the parent company Instructure. Canvas has a very high uptime rating of 99.9%.
